Laerdal Tunnel, Aurland

One of our highlights of our second day in Norway is to pass through the Laerdal Tunnel – the longest road tunnel in the world. Work of this 24.51km road tunnel began on 15 March 1995 and was officially open on 27 November 2000 at its Laerdal portal.

I was a bit afraid of entering such a long road tunnel when I first read that it was part of our itinerary, as even on Singapore’s short KPE tunnel, I felt kind of claustrophobic. 😛 But surprisingly I didn’t feel suffocating throughout the approximately-20-minutes ride in the coach. In fact it was a breeze, literally, as the tunnel was well ventilated. I think they have done a wonderful job building this tunnel in such a mountainous area! 🙂

Getting closer to the tunnel!

Kind driver parked by the side to allow us to take quick shots of the tunnel 🙂
